The Honest Cow
Punyakoti was a cow. She had a cal His name was chenna. One day punyakoti was returning home from the forest. There was a tiger. He had been hungry for a week. He wanted to eat the cow.
Punyakoti said:“You can eat me, if you like. But let go home , first . I shall see my Chenna. Then I shall come back.
The tiger laughed. He said : “No, no. I am very hungry. I want to eat you now. Once you see your child , you may not come back.”
The cow said :”I promise, in the name of god. I shall come back. The tiger agreed. “The cow went to back home. She fed her child. Then she said :“I am going away, my son. You will be an orphan soon. Remember this my son: always come back. Home in time.”
Chenna was sad. He cried and cried. He said: “must you go away, Amma? Must you die at all? Why must I be an orphan? Where shall I find milk, Amma? Who shall every be good time?”
Punyakoti told the fellow cows:“Look after my chenna , please be always good to him. Always good to him. Do not attack him if he walks before you. Do not attack him if he comes behind you. He is an orphan now.”
Saying this, Punyakoti went back to the tiger. She said: “You can kill me now, O tiger. You can tear my muscles. You can drink my blood , if you like”. The tiger listened to punyakoti. He was moved to tears. The cow was honest . She had kept her promise. The tiger said : “You are an honest cow. God would hate me if ate you. I am sorry, my sister.” saying this , the tiger jumped into the valley.
